What’s in Your Vape Juice? A Guide to Help You Understand What You're Vaping

As a vaper, it’s important that you understand what the ingredients in your e-juice are and what they do. Without this knowledge, you will have no idea if what you're vaping is even safe.

Sure, in the UK, we are heavily regulated and UK-based e-juice sellers must ensure that their product safe, but nonetheless, it’s always better to at least have some understanding of the constituents of e-juice – and if you're buying your juices abroad, it’s even more important.

Today, we are going to explore the main ingredients found in e-juice. We would recommend that you stick to ejuices that contain only the following ingredients. These are the tried and tested ingredients and they are known for being safe.

There are three key ingredients in all e-juice liquids:

  1. Flavour
  2. Diluters
  3. Nicotine

OK, so let’s now look at each in turn.

The Flavouring

It can be difficult to work out exactly what the flavours are made from, but most generally consist of a carrier, which is usually vegetable glycerine or propylene glycol (both of which are also diluters, interestingly enough). To the carrier, we add flavour. The flavour should be derived from a natural ingredient, for example, cinnamon flavouring comes from cinnamon root.

The manufactures of e-juice generally buy their flavouring from a third party. They should be food grade, so that they are safe for consumption. If they aren’t, then choose a different brand of e-juice.

You can contact the manufacture of your e-juice and ask for detailed information on their e-juices. They may not always be as forth coming as you might like – they like to keep their recipes close to their chests in order to prevent imitations – but they should be able to prove that the ingredients they use are safe.

You can also ask your local vape shop for more details. For example, a vape shop in Shoreditch should have information about kilo e liquid. They are selling the product, so they must ensure that the product is safe for use. Vaping is regulated by the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) in the UK, and all Vape Shops must ensure their products adhere to the rules.

The Diluters

Most e-juice uses two diluters. Each diluter has a different function. Let’s take a closer look at each:

  1. Propylene Glycol (PG): this helps to keep the e-juice fluid and easy to move through your vaporiser. It is also responsible for giving the juice a good hit to the back of the throat. Ex-smokers tend to prefer juices that are high in PG.

  1. Vegetable Glycerine (VG): this is the part of the juice that tends to carry the flavour. It has a sweet flavour and creates a mellow hit. It’s also the part of the juice that allows you to blow big plumes. People who like to blow vape rings and have fun with their clouds prefer juices with a high VG ratio.

Nicotine

This is rather self-explanatory. Nicotine is a stimulant and many people are addicted to it. They like to vape it, rather than smoke cigarettes, because it’s safer.

Again, in the UK, the TPD regulates the amount of nicotine in a juice. For instance, you will not be able to find Shoreditch e liquid with more than 20mg of nicotine per 1ml of e-liquid because that is the legal limit in the UK.

We hope that you now have a good idea about the contents of your liquids because it’s important that you understand what you are vaping.
